Waterlogging, soil erosion, and weeds are a common problem that arises during the rainy season, here is a simple yet effective method that ensures your garden remains vibrant and safe throughout the rainy season.
Soil loss:
When it rains heavily and continuously, the direct impact of raindrops scatters away the topsoil of pots leaving the walls and floor dirty. It also causes loss of pot soil.
Waterlogging:
Waterlogging occurs when excess water accumulates in the soil. This can lead to root rot, fungal infections, and ultimately, plant death. Protecting your pots from waterlogging is crucial during the monsoon to maintain healthy plants.
Soil erosion:
When heavy rainfall occurs continuously it wash away the soil and its essential nutrients leading to instability for the plants. This is known as soil erosion.
Solution:
1. Planting Succulents and Small Rooted Plants
Succulents and small-rooted plants are an excellent choice to prevent soil erosion.
Simply Plant the succulents or small rooted plants around the edges of the pot, where they can create a barrier against rain.
By doing it, you can create a natural barrier against the impact of heavy raindrops on the soil.
These plants not only stabilize and prevent erosion but also add aesthetic value to your garden with their unique textures and colors.
They also improve soil health by retaining moisture and providing organic matter as they decompose.
The only drawback of this solution is that it can be done in houseplants that don't require compost.
2. Plastic Sheet Solution
One effective method to protect your plants is by covering them with a plastic sheet. This simple yet efficient solution ensures your plants thrive despite the heavy rains.
Covering your pots with a plastic sheet acts as a barrier against excessive rain. It involves placing a sheet over the pot, ensuring it extends beyond the edges, to prevent it from being blown away by the wind.
#Benefits of Using Plastic Sheets
Using plastic sheets offers several advantages. Firstly, it helps regulate the amount of water your plants receive, preventing soil from over-saturation. Secondly, it reduces the risk of soil erosion caused by heavy rains. Lastly, it provides a temporary shield against weeds.
# Step-by-Step Guide
1. Choose durable, waterproof plastic sheets that can withstand the monsoon conditions.
2. Measure the pots you need to cover and Cut the plastic sheet to size, ensuring it covers the entire pot with some overlap.
3. After cutting the sheets measure the location of the plant in the pot, mark in sheet and cut accordingly.
4. Now the pot cover is ready but for proper air circulation and to manage the amount of water flow in the pot you have to make some holes in it.
5. Cover the pot with these sheet discs.
3. Mulching
Mulching is an effective way to protect pot soil from erosion and control weed growth. By adding a layer of mulch, you can create a barrier that protects the soil from the direct impact of heavy rainfall and keeps the soil in place, even during heavy watering. This helps maintain the soil structure and prevents the loss of essential nutrients.
Mulch also plays a vital role in weed control. By covering the soil surface, it blocks sunlight, preventing weed seeds from growing.
Organic mulches, such as coconut husk, bark chips, straws, or cardboard pieces, are excellent choices. They not only protect the soil but also enrich it as it decomposes, adding valuable nutrients.
